11 Signs On How to Tell If Amethyst Is Real

It is hard to find genuine crystals from fake because the market is mushrooming with fakes. Before you freak out that all is lost, we have the expert’s checklist on how to check if your amethyst is real. These are guaranteed to find you the best conclusion on the authenticity of your gemstone.

·      Hardness

First is the scratch test to tell if amethyst is real. You do it by checking the hardness of the stone you have. Amethyst has 7 on the MOHS scale, hence you should scratch with a 6 and 8 to ensure authenticity. Nail is 2, knife is 5 and steel blade is 6.5 (go figure)!

·      Perfection

There are no perfect natural stones. No two stones look like each other. While good clarity amethyst is available, it will always have discoloration to a certain degree. This stone will not show any zoning of colors too. Real amethyst will have inclusions and flaws that makes it distinct. If you see no impurities or flaws, it is time to move on.

·      Dye In Cracks

Another way gemstone scams work is with dyes. Sellers can often inject purple dye through the cracks in the stone. If you see pigmented cracks, chances are that your amethyst is not real.   

·      No Bubbles

If you see any bubbles, it is not amethyst in your hand. Amethyst is a quartz that exists without bubble-inclusions. It has thread-like inclusions.

·      Sweat Test

While this is a subjective test, it applies to people buying gemstones from sellers directly. Online buyers move on.

What you need to do is watch the body language of the seller when you inquire about the origin, authenticity and grade of the crystal. If they sweat, chances are they are selling a fake crystal (unless they have hypothyroid problems!).

·      Specific Gravity

You can also do an elaborate specific gravity test as explained on WikiHow.  If you get a value close to 2.65, your amethyst is real.

·      Magnifying Glass

Take a magnifying glass and observe the gemstone up close. Compare it with observations on amethysts online.

·      Table Cloth Test

Lay the amethyst on a table with a white table cloth. If the gem is perfectly flat, chances are that you have a fake amethyst.

·      Water Test

This is easy. Run your amethyst under running water to see if it bleeds the purple dye.

If your amethyst came with an anonymous region name, it might be a fake. Ask it to your crystal friends or under the comments below.
